The American Payroll Association (APA)is the professional society for payroll professionals, as well as other professionals who service and support the payroll industry. It has a membership of more than 21,000 and continues to grow; illustrating its rising significance.
The American Payroll Association was founded in 1982 to achieve the following objectives:
  • To increase the Payroll’s skill level through education and mutual support.
  • To obtain recognition of payroll work as a professional discipline.
  • To represent the Payroll Professional on the federal, state and local levels.
  • To provide public service education on payroll and employment issues.
Since the association’s inception, payroll professionals at all levels, as well as Human Resource specialists, tax accountants, consultants and many others who interface with payroll have taken advantage of their eligibility for APA membership.
Proudly representing a diverse population of payroll professionals, predominantly consisting of payroll managers, the APA is comprised of memberships from all 50 US states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico, with an ever increasing interest and following in Canada and other nations.

    APA's electronic bi-weekly payroll compliance newsletter delivered free to National APA members by email.
  • Immediate Compliance Updates
    The APA, acting as a liaison to its membership with federal and state governmental agencies, delivers immediate regulatory and legislative updates via email and on the APA's website.
  • Hotline Referral Services
    APA's  Hotline Referral Services program, operated both online and by telephone, assists its membership by connecting members with questions about related payroll issues to volunteers specializing in payroll relates topics.
  • PAYTECH
    One of the association’s official publications, PAYTECH is a primary reference source for current information about the payroll industry and payroll professionals.
  • Payroll Career Certification
    The American Payroll Association proudly offers two different payroll certifications: Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) and Certified Payroll Professional (CPP). Both designations assist in supporting the recognition of an individual as a dedicated payroll professional.
