Member of the Month - Merianne White

Posted By Cassandra Lopez, Monday, April 13, 2015

How long have you been a member of the Rainier Chapter?

I believe since 2006; nine years.

What are your favorite things to do when you aren't working?

Sleeping and lounging with our dog and two cats while reading.

What is your favorite APA resource?

The resource I read most often is the monthly Payroll Currently for legislative updates.

How has being a member of the APA helped you?

Membership in the APA, and specifically attaining CPP certification, has provided employment and promotion opportunities that I may not have had otherwise. APA’s online and phone resources (CHAMPS) has helped me be the subject matter expert to my employers.

Name one item you couldn’t do your job without.

Two come to mind: Excel and a mechanical pencil.

What would you be if you didn’t work in payroll?

I’d probably be a teacher of some kind, as were most of my family. I get to practice being an instructor with Rainier Chapter’s Education Committee!

Where is your favorite place to go on vacation?

I’ve been fortunate to travel to many exotic locales, but I most often visit Maui.

What is the title of your favorite or most recently read book?

I'm currently reading “American Ghost: A Family's Haunted Past in the Desert Southwest" by Hannah Nordhaus.

Do you attend the monthly meetings every month or have a preferred location?

I try to attend most meetings as I’m usually delivering Payroll Source books. The Seattle location is the most challenging.

What did you do when you found out you passed the CPP exam?

I beamed and thanked the clerk for the good news! I was very impressed that I was able to learn my percentages and walk out with the official certificate on the spot. Do they still print the certificate with your photo on it?

What was the best resource you used in passing the exam?

I read the Payroll Source, answered the questions at the end of each chapter, and took four online KAC practice tests. The practice tests helped me anticipate how questions would be written on the exam.

If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would you do?

I can’t lie, work would not be a priority. I’d travel… my goal is to visit all seven continents. I have three to go: Africa, Australia and Antarctica.

What is your favorite online video or tv show?

I tend to binge watch when I have time, but I make time for “Downton Abbey” every Sunday. My guilty pleasure is bridal shows on TLC.

Where do you work?

I just started with Blucora in Bellevue. I’ve left payroll for now and have stepped into a paralegal and stock administration role.

What is the best perk or benefit of the company you work for?

Four walls! My last few employers had open floor plans where you needed headphones for quiet and a conference room for privacy. I now have glass walls and a door.

If you had a bad day at work, what would help to turn it around?

A big hug from my husband and a cocktail.

One goal of our new website is to engage our members more. With that in mind we are starting a new feature to highlight a different member each month and thank them for their contributions to the Chapter.

Cassie has been working hard with Elaine Burt to keep Cvent going and now is working on learning our new system with yourmembership.com.
